“What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”

Simple TreeLast Friday, we watched the old animated version of Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas with the grand-kids.  These words have been reverberating in my mind …

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”

Then I put on one of my favorite Christmas albums … by Downhere … and listened to these words:

Even if nobody said Merry Christmas
If even the choirs and belfries made no sound
There would be peace on the Earth, and forgiveness
‘Cause its Christmas in our hearts

Someone asked me if I was in the Christmas spirit the other day.  I paused – so easy to say, “no, not yet” … but in reality … Christmas is not about the outward trappings, not about the ribbons, tags, packages, boxes or bags.

Christmas is all about the heart … like Dickens’ Scrooge, I want to  “honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year!”
