real stars

Tonight as we were driving home at dusk … the fireflies were everywhere!

Here come real stars to fill the upper skies,
And here on earth come emulating flies,
That though they never equal stars in size,
(And they were never really stars at heart)
Achieve at times a very star-like start.
Only, of course, they can’t sustain the part.
~ Robert Frost

Fireflies make me smile … they shine so brightly … even if just for a moment.  Frost is correct – the fireflies cannot sustain their star-like quality.

And then I remember that the scripture says we shine like stars.  In our own power, in our own strength, we are like fireflies in that we cannot sustain the glow.  It’s only when we allow the glory of God to shine through us … in our surrender, the glow from within is uninhibited … sustained by his everlasting light …

Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.  ~ Daniel 12:3
