remembering to plug back in

This weekend I’ve seen Jesus in the hug between sisters, the attention of a dad towards his daughter, the valentine card given to a wife, the food shared among friends, the singing of a love song to a bride, the tears shed over the pain illustrated in a movie, the tender prayer of a child, the scampering of a squirrel among leaves, the quiet attentiveness of the deer … and along the way, Jesus is reminding me that he is present … we don’t have to invite his presence … he is here … among us … within us.

A sentence  from Anne Lamott stood out this weekend as I was reading … “when you pray, you are not starting the conversation from scratch, just remembering to plug back into a conversation that’s always in progress.”

When we see God in our surroundings, our circumstances, our lives … it’s not that he just appeared, he’s been there all along … it’s just that we remembered to plug back into … we opened our spiritual eyes to see him at work.

Isaac Watts wrote:

There’s not a plant or flower below, but makes Thy glories known,
And clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from Thy throne;
While all that borrows life from Thee is ever in Thy care;
And everywhere that we can be, Thou, God art present there.
